Creek Cleanup

The San Francisco Bay watershed covers 4600 square miles, carrying water that started as snow or rain from the mountains down to the sea. An extensive network of local streams and creeks drain into rivers and eventually into the Bay.

If you’re lucky enough to have a creek or stream on your property, it’s important to make sure you keep it clear of debris that can slow the stream or even cause overflows. It’s also a good idea to remove invasive nonnative plants, as they can quickly spread and clog waterways.

At Terra, we have lots of experience clearing creeks to let them flow naturally and look their best. We start by removing any trash and natural debris that accumulated since the previous season. We remove some of the large fallen branches and limbs but leave others on site to keep the local wildlife systems intact and to retain a natural look.

Next we assess the vegetation, identifying and removing plants that obstruct the flow. Native grasses, sedges, and groundcovers are usually left in place, but invasive species like pampas grass and Scotch broom are removed or cut all the way back. Small, weedy trees like Acacia are thinned or removed to open up views.
